The Netherlands after Portugal defeat: We deserved it

After the loss against Portugal, Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk was left to reflect on a very bad tournament for the Dutch. The 2010 World Cup finalists has been eliminated from the Euro 2012, with 3 losses and no wins.

The Netherlands, regarded as one of the favorites of the tournament, finished last of Group B after failing to take a single point from their three games.

After losing to both Denmark and Germany, there was hope with the Netherlands as they went into their final encounter with Portugal (a win against the Sellecao would give them a fighting chance of qualification). However, two great goals from Cristiano Ronaldo (who was a non-performer in his previous games) sent the Dutch packing and weeping.

"In all the three games we started well, but we couldn't hold it, just like today. We came up front with 1-0 but we need to hold on after a good start. We weren't able to do that again,” Van Marwijk told NOS.

"We didn't have the good shape in this tournament to create goals. We give away chances too easily and then we concede goals. The first match against Denmark was very important. After that match we became insecure."

Van Marwijk for a repeat of their form two years ago when the they were able to reach the 2010 World Cup final, but that form never showed up in this current tournament.

"I knew all along that it would be very hard to go to the quarter-final," he admitted. "I had the hope that we could bring another performance like two years ago at the World Cup.

"When you look at the age of the team, you know that we couldn't get any better. We only have ourselves to blame."

Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart also admitted that the Dutch had not played well enough to progress.

"We were not good enough this tournament," Van der Vaart admitted to NOS. "It was just a very poor performance by us. That's why we didn't deserve to go through.

"You know it's going to be a tough match. After our goal they were the better team. We were very poor. It's very disappointing, especially for the Dutch fans.”

"After the loss against Denmark, you know it's going to be difficult, because you have to face two teams. Now we have to start all over again."
