Euro 2012 Predictions and Preview: Sweden vs England

Group Elimination D: Friday, 15 June 2012 - Kiev - Olympic Stadium

The Swedes meets the “Three Lions” on June 15 at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev.

England

FIFA world ranked number 6, England looks to win this time after struggling against France on June 11. A victory is needed or else it will be an uphill battle for the “Three Lions”. A win will put them in a more position. England exhibited an excellent defensive play against France and discipline was present thanks to Roy Hodgson.

What England showed with their defence, they failed to do the same with their offensive side during the game against France. Plus, the absence of Wayne Rooney due to a suspension does not help the English either. James Milner also needs to step it up against the desperate Swedes for every small effort from each player will go a long way for a team that had issues with losing players in the recent past.

Sweden

Sweden was given a devastating blow to their climb up the qualification ladder after an upset of a 2-1 victory by Ukraine on June 11. There’s still hope for the team and it comes in the form of players ZlatanIbrhimovic, Christian Wilhelmsson, and striker Johan Elmander. Another factor to consider is the presence of club scouts from the U.K., plenty of them, so one can expect the Swedes to really put in much effort to impress the possible suitors.

The Swedes come in at number 17 in the world FIFA ranking. A pretty gap from England at who are at number 6. Also, their loss to Euro first timers Ukraine showed a lot. Sweden really needs to win this upcoming match and anything other than a victory can be considered game over for Sweden.

Predictions: England wins 1-0

All the English need to do is cast away their skirts and start attacking. If this is accomplished, it will be the end for the Swedes. Defence is already a strong point as long as they play with the same formation. According to fans of TheOnlineSportsWorld, Sweden is a no go.

Euro 2012 Highlights: Sweden Takes Early Exit Losing to England

England was able to come from behind and knock out Sweden 3-2 in the Euro Cup 2012 Friday.

Striker Danny Welbeck scored the go ahead on a the game winner for England in the 78th minute after the introduction of substitute Theo Walcott swung a see-sawing Group D battle back in his side's favor.

England got off to a dream start when recalled striker Andy Carroll headed it into a 23rd-minute lead.

But an own-goal from Glen Johnson on 49 minutes followed by a header from Olof Mellberg in the 59th minute threatened to set up a disastrous night for Roy Hodgson's side.

However, the substitution of James Milner for Walcott changed the game. The Arsenal winger lashed in a 64th-minute equaliser to make it 2-2 and then provided the run and pass which set up Welbeck's winner.

"It's always nice to come off the bench and show what you can do," Walcott said.

"We felt from first game (1-1 draw with France) we wanted to pick things up and to get three goals is terrific."

Welbeck was delighted more for the team than himself.

"It was a typical game of two-halves but we always had the belief. There's a great spirit about this squad."

England's first ever competitive victory over the Swedes means it will qualify for the quarter-finals with only a point in its final group game against co-hosts Ukraine in Donetsk next Tuesday.

However, Hodgson will want to see a marked improvement from his side if it is to secure the draw it needs after a performance littered with errors and shaky defending.
