Alvaro Negredo has revealed that Spain has no devised plan for stopping superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, but said that Iker Casillas will be assigned to nullify the Portugal forward if he makes his way into performing in Wednesday's Euro 2012 semifinal match.
The Seleccao star player’s craft is no secret to the La Roja, since he also plays in La Liga with Real Madrid. This familiarity though has not produced them any clear tactic against the 27 year old powerhouse.
"In football, everyone knows Cristiano Ronaldo and that he is a player overflowing with quality," the Sevilla striker told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.
"We have no plan to stop him, but we know that he is a good free-kick taker and that requires you not to give away any silly fouls.”
"But we have the best goalkeeper in the world, who knows him well and knows how to stop him."
Negredo is actually more disturbed with how Spain will be demolishing one of the greatest defensive partnerships at Euro 2012.
"Pepe and Bruno Alves are great centre-backs," the forward conceded. "Pepe is aggressive and strong and fast. I know him as he plays in Spain. He's one of the best centre-backs in the world.
"Bruno Alves is very strong and powerful in the air, and the two make a great defensive duo."
Spain defender Alvaro Arbeloa on the other hand is adamant that Portugal has a lot more in their armory than just Ronaldo. Ronaldo’s Real Madrid team-mate noted that while the Seleccao superstar started off the tournament in frustrating fashion after a not so impressive performance against Germany and Denmark, he has done impressive displays since.
Arbeloa believes Spain will have to make sure they do not solely concentrate on Ronaldo, pointing out that they have several other dangerous players.
Speaking to reporters, Arbeloa said: "We all know that Ronaldo is an excellent player, but Portugal are not only Cristiano. They have had an excellent tournament with players of great quality and we have stop all of them, not only Cristiano.”
"We know how good he is, and he is showing that at the Euros. We hope that we have a good game and Cristiano not so much. It's always physically and mentally demanding to face a player who is one of the best and playing at a spectacular level.”
In the upcoming match, Ronaldo will not be the only Real Madrid team-mate Arbeloa will face, with Fabio Coentrao and Pepe also with Portugal. But the Spanish right-back insists club friendships are irrelevant when playing for the national team.
“Tomorrow I will have not club-mates, they will be enemies.”
